Are you wondering... What is LAP?

Sunrise Elementary School is one of the schools in the Enumclaw School District that receives Learning Assistance Program (LAP) funds. LAP provides additional help to students in reading and math. The objective of LAP is to accelerate the achievement of students by providing supplemental academic support. Your student's classroom teacher will continue to be the primary reading and math teacher for your student.

How Students Qualify

Each year, teachers assess all students using the Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA) in the Fall and Spring to assess reading progress. The results of this assessment determine which students are referred for the Learning Assistance Program.  The students referred are those not yet meeting grade level standard in reading.

A LAP staff member then assesses each student not meeting grade level standard.  During the LAP reading assessment, the LAP teacher listens to each student read, then asks questions to determine how well the student can recall and understand what they read.

Based on these two assessments, as well as teacher observation and any other supplemental literacy assessments, students qualify for the LAP program.

What LAP Looks Like

LAP supplements classroom reading instruction by providing an opportunity for students to work in a small group with individualized instruction. Students qualifying for LAP services in reading will meet with the LAP teacher or paraeducator to work on literacy and reading skills in the LAP classroom or in the student's classroom.
