What a fun day we had today! Here's what we did:
For math, we got together at the carpet (a day off from videos). 4th grade is beginning long division and 5th grade is solidifying their understanding of adding, subtraction, multiplying and comparing fractions! It was great seeing such difficult concepts being understood and seeing kids having fun with the math!
For writing, we did a quick write with persuasive writing. Students wrote on a variety of topics including dogs being the best pet, cats being the best pet, soccer being the best sport, and so much more! We chose one piece of writing that was intended to persuade the reader that soccer is better than volleyball. The class had to go to one side of the room if they thought soccer was a better sport and the other side of the room if they thought volleyball was better. Then the student read her essay and students were then asked if they'd change their minds. We discussed what could be done to the writing to be more persuasive. We decided that as writers, we need to think about why someone may disagree with us and make sure to address that in our writing!
Later, we had our read aloud and took some time to read our reading group books.
Then, the best part... science! The topic... What causes rapid changes in the Earth's surface? We began by exploring this prezi and making scientific observations (keeping to facts rather than opinions). See this video and this one. We then watched a video of Mt. St. Helen's erupting and even created a scientific model of an earthquake. See this video. Since students worked really hard, they had time to explore landforms and other places around the world using Google Maps (like Google Earth). See this video.
Such a fun day!
Hi parents. Please check out out page called, "Donations Needed." I am looking for some help gathering some materials for our class. As you will see, some will need to be bought but many are things that you may already have and would normally throw out. I will continue to update this throughout the year as more needs arise! Thank you for your help!
Thanks again to all families who came to have coffee with me this morning and/or FCD! I had a complete blast doing science with you and your children. The parent involvement here at Westwood is incredible! It's obvious how much you care about your children! Here is a link to some of the photos I took today.
November’s Family Connection Day - Friday, November 18th
I would like to try something a little different for November’s Family Connection Day. I would like to invite you (the parent) into the classroom before school to get a closer look at what your child is doing at school. We will call this “Coffee with Mrs. Bourdage.” When school starts, we will then begin our science or art project. Students are welcome to join during Coffee with Mrs. Bourdage.
Coffee with Mrs. Bourdage - 8:15-8:45 in the classroom
(8:45-9:00 I will be busy setting up and taking attendance but you are still welcome to wait in the classroom)
Project - 9:00-10:00 (may go until 10:30 if needed)
Click on the link below to view the photos. This was so much fun! I can't wait until November's Family Connection Day!
We will have our Halloween party on Friday, October 28th from 11:15-12:30.
Any parents who are interested in helping are invited to attend a meeting Tuesday, October 11th at 3:40 to plan. If you can't make the meeting but would still like to help, just let me know!
